Instructional Systems Design

Foundational models & process
EME 6613 · Required Text

Dick, W., Carey, L., & Carey, J. O. (2022). The systematic design of instruction (9th ed.). Pearson.

Annotation: The foundational step-by-step guide to the Dick, Carey & Carey systems-design model — the field’s most widely adopted instructional design framework. The 9th edition walks designers through ten iterative steps, from identifying instructional goals and analyzing learners through developing and revising instruction. An essential reference for any instructional designer working in formal training or education settings where a systematic, measurable approach is required.

Performance Improvement & Planned Change

Diagnosing needs & driving organizational change
EME 6613 · Required Text

Van Tiem, D. M., Moseley, J. L., & Dessinger, J. C. (2012). Fundamentals of performance technology: Optimizing results through people, process, and organizations (3rd ed.). John Wiley & Sons.

Annotation: A comprehensive introduction to the Human Performance Technology (HPT) model — a systematic, results-oriented approach to improving workplace performance through the alignment of people, process, and organizational systems. The book integrates performance analysis, intervention selection, change management, and evaluation, providing a framework that extends instructional design beyond training into broader organizational improvement. Especially useful for designers moving from course development into performance consulting.

Rossett, A. (1987). Training needs assessment. Educational Technology Publications.

Annotation: A seminal practitioner’s guide to training needs assessment, distinguishing needs assessment from front-end analysis and offering structured methods for identifying performance gaps before training is designed. Rossett’s frameworks — including the four purposes of needs assessment and the sources-and-tools matrix — remain a foundational reference for analysts deciding whether training is the right intervention and, if so, what it must accomplish.
